What is WordPress SEO?

Have you ever heard of WordPress SEO, but still wondering what it is?

I will explain everything about WordPress SEO in this article.

So, what is WordPress SEO?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization or Natural Referencing.

When we begin to talk about search engines, Google comes to mind immediately. But of course, there are other search engines such as Yandex and Microsoft Bing, but Google occupies 91.5% of the internet search market.

SEO is a set of requirements put in place by Google to be able to position your site in the best places of the SERPs(Search Engine Result Pages).

Simply put, it’s a compilation of actions like image optimization, meta descriptions, links, social media presence, keyword placement, etc., to get featured on Google’s first search page.

Note that this SEO strategy is free, yet much more effective than paid SEM.

If you want to embark on this adventure, know that it will take you time, at the beginning. But, once you’ve completed your page, WordPress will work for you even when you’re sleeping, leading to more visits, and therefore improving conversion rates on your page. I hope that makes sense.

How to optimize your WordPress SEO?

Choose a good web host

Choosing a good host for your WordPress site is the first step to take if you want to rank well on Google.

There are three hosting solutions on the market: shared hosting, dedicated hosting, and virtual hosting.

Shared hosting is based on sharing the resources of the same server with other customers. It is less expensive than the other two but only applies to sites with low traffic.

This is a good option for blogs or a showcase page. If you want to set the bar high, you can opt for a multisite formula.

Dedicated hosting as its name suggests will assign you a single server used simply for your web activity. This choice is wise if you are going to grow because it will bring you speed and rapid management of the flow of visits.

Virtual hosting works like shared hosting, but on a virtual machine, which makes it possible to have more loading power at a lower cost.

Choosing a good WordPress theme

You must choose a WordPress theme, but beware, some themes may slow down your page loading speed.

The best tip is to opt for a theme that has fewer features and will make it easier for the server and browsers to work. Opt for aesthetic and ergonomic sites and favor the default WordPress themes. These are lightweight, but also easy to customize.

Test the speed of WordPress

This is one of the essential steps in the SEO of WordPress sites. The speed test will help you know if your site is loading optimally or not. The calculation of site loading time is done with tools such as Pingdom, GTmetrix, YSlow, or Google Speed Insights

Some tools, depending on the results obtained in the test, can offer you tips and tricks to solve the slow loading times.

Remove outdated plugins and themes

Removing old themes like flash and unnecessary plug-ins is also a step for your search engine optimization and a good way to improve loading speed.

Also, remember to eliminate duplicate extensions. For example, if your WordPress site includes two plug-ins with similar functionality, eliminate one of them.

Reduce image size

As you certainly know, images are heavy data within servers. It is, therefore, necessary to reduce their weight as much as possible to improve the loading time and therefore your SEO.

WHAT IS WORDPRESS SEO

Reducing the size of the images is easy, some software easily does this for you. My favorite is Tinypng which compresses images while keeping the quality intact.

But you have access to several others, resizing-pictures.com or even Photoshop, etc. They will do the job for you.

Note that images in PNG format are the most recommended, but I must confess that I do convert my PNG and JPEG images into the WEBP forms before uploading. It works great for me.

Compress CSS and JavaScript files

CSS allows you to choose the color or the font of your site. The role of these files is similar to that of HTML tags. JavaScript and CSS files are essential for a website, but they should be compressed to improve its loading speed.

This won’t be difficult with software like Clean CSS and JSCompres. WordPress also offers an extension, called WordPress WP minify, which at the same time compresses and combines CSS and JavaScript.

However, care should be taken so that the compression does not ultimately disrupt the display of the site.

Using a Cache Plugin

It is strongly advised to use a caching plug-in as part of your SEO optimization strategy in WordPress.

The term “caching” refers to reducing the number of resources used by origin servers to serve them to faster edge servers. This action greatly improves the display speed of a site or page.

Caching can go through the use of WordPress plugins like WP Rocket, or W3 Total Cache.

SEO plugin in WordPress

There are a few SEO plugin in WordPress that are worth mentioning at this point. My favorite SEO plugin in WordPress is Yoast SEO plugin.

Yoast is a jewel when it comes to SEO optimization for your WordPress pages. But if you are more comfortable with RankMath, that’s not a bad idea either.

For SEO, you should configure Yoast SEO plugin on your WordPress website.

Yoast will contribute to the better ranking of your web page, and easily too.

The first step is to do the general setup of your site with Yoast SEO.

This step is quite simple, you must fill in your domain name and your status.

Yoast SEO plugin among other features allows you to optimize your posts’ readability and SEO scores.

Regarding the images, there is also the possibility of referencing them with Yoast SEO by filling in the Alt attributes. Anyway thanks to Yoast SEO wizard, you will know what needs to be done for the optimization of your images.

In addition to activating the Sitemap and sharing your site/blog on social media, there are a few other things you can do. From your site, you may integrate your Google Search Console account to Yoast SEO plugin.

Also, for writing your WordPress articles, many keyword research tools are available to write optimized content.

Some are free, others range from freemium to premium tools. Some great keyword research tools that you can lay your hands on are Semrush, ARefs, or Ubersuggest

Above all, remember to eliminate duplicates in your content with anti-plagiarism tools like Duplichecker, Copyscape, and Siteliner.

Conclusion

SEO which stands for Search Engine Optimization is a faithful, 24 hours working servant that helps your web pages remain in the eye of your target audience.

Getting your site to be SEO compliant can be a lot of work at the start, but you will reap its benefits, almost for eternity.
